Goals? Check. Aligned Behaviors? Double Check.

Welcome to Week 2 of the December Change Challenge! (Catch up here if you’re just joining!).

Each week we are making progress on answering the questions to what extent are we immune to the change we seek? And, what can we do to reflect with more attention to achieving our growth goals? (These are inspired by an awesome book - check it out!).

Now that growth goals are established, it’s time to proactively reflect about our actions in relation to our goals. Specifically, what are we doing or not doing that undermines, sabotages or derails us from achieving these goals? This is a BIG question that requires fearless honesty, time, and grace. Luckily, you are in the place to draw energy and support from examples, get guidance on how to boost your reflection.

Welcome Charlie Ann to the Change Challenge!

I am committed to focusing my energy and mind on positivity and gratitude with intention every day.

What am I doing or not doing instead?

1. I find myself focusing on negative words or behaviors and reflecting them back in my behaviors to whomever spoke or exhibited those negative words or behaviors.

2. I tend to linger too long in negative energy once something has brought me down (event, interaction, situation, etc.)

3. I am not quick to ask for help when I am stressed and lingering (#2).

Learn more about Charlie Ann at the end of this post.

Considerations to take your reflection this week to the next level:

Be honest and fearless: seek to find all of the things you do that work against your growth goal

Yes, it's about admitting some bad behaviors (behaviors is the key word!)

Be as concrete as possible and think to your behavior or action:

  • Less like: I get bored when I mentor others.

  • More like: I stop listening when someone explains their problem. OR, I immediately solve others' problems before hearing the full story

It's not about everything though - just what is derailing, undermining, or sabotaging your growth goal.

  • What are the things you are doing or not doing instead of focusing your energy and mind on positivity and gratitude?

Pick back up with Clintel in her reflection:

I want to invest in and celebrate my growth without guilt.

What am I currently doing or not doing instead?

  • My bar for “success” and how I judge my impact is influenced mainly by external factors (other people, formal titles, receiving rewards and acknowledgements)

  • I question the impact I’m making often and blame it on “being farther removed”

  • I avoid talking about my work with family and friends because it makes me uncomfortable

  • I use statements like “at least..” or “it could be worse” to justify feelings of discontent

  • I rarely introduce myself as a business owner or promote myself outside of my formal role at Milwaukee Succeeds

  • I have stopped investing meaningful time in interests or hobbies outside of work

Check out what Rebecca is uncovering in the change challenge.

I am committed to being fully present in each moment.

What am I currently doing or not doing instead?

Doing instead:

  • Focusing on the future and trying to get everything planned out, even though I know life will never go according to that plan

  • Prioritizing lower-importance tasks and then multitasking to get everything done

  • Mindlessly scrolling social media

  • Focusing more on myself than others

Not doing:

  • Being intentional about how I spend my time and who I spend it with.

  • Grounding myself when entering a new meeting, personal interaction, etc.

    • Currently I view most of my daily activities as something to check off my To Do list

  • Meditation

  • Paying attention to other what others are going through
