On Savoring what Actually Makes Us Happy

Alright - so I haven’t historically been great at practicing well-rounded wellness. This will not be a, “learn from me! I’ve got all in balance post.” Instead, I’m considering this reflection an invitation to myself to reset this week and give myself a plan and opportunity to live well in the last several weeks of 2020.

Every week this year I have set up a personal, weekly tracker to set intentions for the week and how I care for myself and care for my space. It’s basic.

And yet, here’s last week —>

Yep, it’s time for some change. My intention in this post is to both activate my accountability to this community of change agents and inspire some new ideas for you to incorporate as we travel this journey together.

Here’s how I will be focusing on the behaviors that ACTUALLY make us happier in the coming weeks:

Taking time for social connection

  • I’m going to turn the TV off!!!!  Take at least one hour of what otherwise would be semi-conscious TV watching and pick up the phone to call a friend or family member every week.

  • I’ll stop skipping the virtual “coffee & chat” or “happy hour” opportunities at work - attend and be present!

Take time to do something kind for others

  • I’ll finish my plan for the knitting-based gifts I’ll make with my family this season and choose the yarn I’ll use. (I am SO excited for this - knitting is a brand new skill for me. I might make mostly scarves… but they’re full of love!)

Showing gratitude for what I have

  • I’m going to shift the whiteboard on my fridge from the old months-old and dried up grocery list to a gratitude tracker. I can write a new gratitude statement every day!

Taking time for healthy habits

  • I’ll make time for a (even chilly) walk once a week - either socially distanced with a friend or over a phone call to connect.

  • FOR REAL, I’m going to make time for yoga 3 days a week. I always feel better afterward.

Mediating

  • I’ll check in Audible what’s new in the mediation genre they have and download a few.

  • On long work days, I’ll engage in a short meditation / gratitude practice to transition from my work mindset to my evening/life mindset.
