Transitioning into 2021

2020 is behind us! This is the moment we have been waiting for! 2021 can be a breath of fresh air!

We’re 4 days in - does it feel like it? In his book Transitions, Making Sense of Life’s Changes, William Bridges differentiates change and transitions. Change is external, tangible, goal-driven, visible. Seasons change, furniture changes, the people in our life change, years change. Transitions though, are internal. They take time and intention, and we can have some say in how they go.

“One of the most important differences between a change and a transition is that changes are driven to reach a goal, but transitions start with letting go of what no longer fits or is adequate to the life stage you are in. You need to figure out for yourself what exactly that no-longer-appropriate thing is. There’s no list in the back of the book. But there is a hint that can save you considerable pain and remorse: Whatever it is, it is internal.” (p.128)

In his book, Bridges frames 3 phases of transition: an ending, a neutral zone, and a new beginning. To dig into this process, check out the coaching questions I’ve paired with each phase below!

An ending

What from the last year do you want to release?

  • Ways of being?

  • Relationships?

  • Routines or experiences?

  • Emotions?

What will it look like, feel like, sound like without those things present for you?

  • Visualize this and in your mind, experience it with as much realness as you can

  • Check in - what feelings are present?

A neutral zone

Where and when can you spend some to be alone and get lost in thoughts or day dreams?

When you’re there, consider:

  • What is it that you really want for this new year?

  • Ok, and, what is it that you really want for this new year?

  • What would it look like for you to reorient your mindset, your energy, your values, and your daily routines toward what you really want?

  • How ready are you for this? What can you do to support your readiness?

  • Do you need more time for all these questions? When and where will you take that time?

A beginning

With whom do you want to share your aspirations for 2021 and plans for this new beginning?

What is the smallest, most natural step you can take to bringing your aspirations for 2021 to life?

How will you celebrate after you’ve taken this initial step?
