Stop hassling me about my purpose.

"Having to find my purpose is too much pressure!"

This is what my wise, wonderful friend Becky shared at our book club the other night and her admission made us ALL of us breathe a little easier. You know why? Because Becky always speaks the truth. On top of all the transitions we're going through right now (school, work, life, relationships, COVID, fall), do we really have to worry about getting connected to our star aligned purpose?

Becky and I vote no.

So it’s official: no more worrying about dedicating yourself to finding a purpose.

What if instead, you dedicated yourself to your ENERGY?

You don't have to connect to some grandiose universal plan for your life. Let that be. Instead, try connecting to how you feel now, today. If you know very clearly when you what makes you apathetic, what you're giving all of yourself to, what you can find win-wins in, and connect more with that sense of “where did the time go?” flow - you can make the little choices today that add up in any transition to a happier new beginning.

If you were to take a quiet moment to check on your energy, what do you think it would say back to you?

Why even bother trying right now?

Everything sucks and no one knows what they're doing, so how should I know?

Meh, I'm here, I guess.

I'll think about me in 2-5 years, others come first right now.

Let's see how we can make this work for everyone.

We've got this! I'm full of joy, flow, connection.

Notice what you hear, then dedicate yourself to your energy:

If you’re hearing, “Why even bother trying right now?”

  • Give yourself self some love through a favorite personal hobby or treat

  • Make a list of things you've pulled off, even when you didn't think you could to remind you of your power

  • Call a friend and ask them to talk it through with you

If you’re hearing, “Everything sucks and no one knows what they're doing, so how should I know?”

  • Write down a list of what you're experiencing lately and give yourself some empathy - you are going through a lot

  • Ask yourself, "what is the most loving thing I can do for myself or another person?"

  • Make a list of the things you really want to (not should) know, do or experience this year.

If you’re hearing, “Meh, I'm here, I guess.”

  • Give yourself some grace! It's ok to be meh sometimes. If you want a bit more though:

  • Make a list of what's brought you the most energy this month, then see if you can plan to increase these activities by 5%

  • Create a vision for your ideal self or lifestyle 1 year from now - get inspired and plan your first step

If you’re hearing, “I'll think about me in 2-5 years, others come first right now.”

  • Ask yourself, would the people you're loving and caring for so well wish this same thing for you?

  • Choose one person you consistently show up for and ask them to help you find / hold you accountable to some time for you

  • Notice your energy after you've gotten even a half hour of space, time or a treat, what do you want to remember or learn from this moment?

If you’re hearing, “Let's see how we can make this work for everyone.”

  • Double, triple check that YOU are on that list of, "Everyone"

  • See what happens when you shfit the question from, "let's see how we can make this work for everyone..." to, "let's see how we can make this the most joyful for everyone..."

  • High-five, virtual hug, send happy gifs to the people you're working with.

And when you hear, “We've got this! I'm full of joy, flow, connection.”

  • Notice where you are and who you're with - then see if you can add 10% more time like this to your week

  • Celebrate your energy with someone you trust to celebrate it with you

  • Consider how you could create space for this sense of flow in other areas of your life
