Expectations are Hot

Quick:

  • What's the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the word, EXPECTATIONS?

  • Now consider the first thing that comes to mind when you hear, ACCEPTANCE.

Was it easier for you define expectations than acceptance?

And if so, what's up with that?

To dig into that question, I've got to first introduce Clintel Hasan.

Clintel is passionate educator, advocate for educational equity and social justice issues, daughter, Milwaukeean, caring community member. I've had the privilege of leading alongside Clintel since 2012 as a colleague, manager, coach fellow entrepreneur, and of course, friend.

How do you know what to expect of yourself?

This is a question I asked Clintel Hasan last week in a conversation about how we navigate what we expect of ourselves and what the world expects of us. Spoiler alert: This conversation ended being as much about expectations as it was acceptance, openness, adaptability and grace.

Join Clintel and I as we unpack the expectations we have for ourselves.

You'll walk away a bit more ready to define what you really want to hold yourself to and a I hope, even more ready to love yourself unconditionally through the journey it takes to get there.

Jump in and reset your mindset on expectations:

  • 01:03: Meet Clintel Hasan

  • 03:10: When I say expectations, what immediately comes to mind for you? Acceptance?

  • 06:55: What do you think of the fact that "expectations" are so easy to find, and acceptance, so difficult?

  • 10:10: What does openness have to do with expectations or acceptance?

  • 12:15: How do you even go about deciding what to expect from yourself?

  • 16:20: The risk of going full-force at a single 5-year plan and what we might consider instead

  • 17:55: Dealing with, "Should"

  • 18:25: The difference between expectations and goals

  • 22:00: Remembering our expectations and beliefs can change, and that's ok AND what's at risk if we don't acknowledge those changes

  • 25:30: What's the most meaningful point of expectation or acceptance you have set for yourself lately?

  • 32:00: A note on grace for ourselves

  • 33:45: If you could name the terms for your life & leadership in 2022, what would they be?

What in our conversation was meaningful for you?
